These two monsters were taken on opening day April 6th 2000. Both were called away from an amourous hen. I was hunting with one of my long time buddies, Jim Freeman,  on his first ever turkey hunt. He wasn't quite sure what to expect. He was amazed at the wariness of Toms at this time of the year. We did some fierce cutting from an "Osage Orange" slate/glass and these two puppies are the result. Both of them dropped at 12 paces. Jim also doubled up on some Rio's.
That grinning face belongs to one of my closest friends and owner of many of my calls, Sean Richie. That Rio was his first ever turkey. It was taken on April 7th 2000, the day after opening. Shawn used my "Bocote" slate/glass. Obviously it worked, and worked well. Sean had to call this Tom in twice, the first time he did'nt allow for a high percentage shot, but the second time Ole Mr Tom clucked his last cluck at 20 yards.
That's me with Rodan, the turkey that destroyed Tokyo. Some friends swore they saw a zip-code tatooed on his rump. This Rio was huge. He weighed in at 23 lbs. He had a 12 inch beard and 1 inch spurs. I took him using an "Osage Orange" slate/slate.He's a beautiful trophy.
On the right is Rick Williams, looking like he's modeling for a Cabela's catalog. Rick was using one of my first slate calls that I ever crafted. It's a neat feeling having a guy whose never taken a turkey take his first ever on one of your first ever calls. Wait, let me back up, no...that sounds ok, I think, anyway....Rick took him with a "Pecan" slate/slate.
And this good looking hellhound is Mattie, the Wonder Dawg. When Mattie isnt busy retrieving ducks, she's involved in the tuning of calls. She's got a great ear. Problem is, once the tuning commences, she thinks it's hunting time and gets all sweaty with anticipation. Awesome hunting partner.
